Chennimalai is Erode district's best-known handloom town for bedsheets, bedspreads, pillow covers, towels and home furnishings. A Mini Handloom Park with 40 looms is being built there.
Chennimalai, about 25–28 km from Erode, is known as the "Handloom Town" of Erode district. It is the best-known source in the region for cotton bedsheets, bedspreads, towels and other bed-and-bath textiles.
Weavers here make home textiles: bedsheets, blankets, pillow covers, napkins, table mats, towels, quilts, curtains, cushion covers and table runners. Large looms can weave king- and queen-size bedsheets in one piece. Standard jacquard looms weave up to 90 inches wide and plain looms up to 110 inches.
Three weave styles are common. Plain weave gives bright, simple stripes and bold checks, used for bedsheets and curtains. Terry weave leaves loops uncut for towels. Jacquard weave produces two- or three-colour repeating floral and geometric patterns, often inspired by temple architecture.
Before independence, Chennimalai weavers mainly made sarees and lungis. After independence they moved to bedsheets and home décor. M. P. Nachimuthu, who received the Padma Shri in 1983, introduced home-décor weaving and founded Chentex Handlooms.
The town has roughly 33 weaver societies. The best known are Chentex, Chencoptex and Kalicoptex, which employ thousands of weavers. A weavers' colony of 1,010 houses on the town's outskirts is described as one of the biggest in Asia. Co-optex supports yarn supply and sales, and a Mini Handloom Park with 40 looms is being built.
Chennimalai products sell across India and abroad. International buyers place orders with their own designs, and IKEA has sourced Chennimalai fabric for its home ranges. For wholesale, buyers deal with the cooperative societies or with traders who bring Chennimalai goods to Erode's Gani Market and Texvalley. Ask about loom width, yarn count and whether the piece is handloom or powerloom. Powerlooms also operate in the town, and the products can look alike.
