Why are Rapier Jacquard sarees more expensive than Water-Jet sarees in Surat?

Short answer

Water-jet looms weave high-speed plain and dobby synthetic fabrics using water propulsion at low cost, whereas Rapier Jacquard looms use mechanical grippers and electronic jacquard harnesses to weave heavy, multi-colour zari brocade, Banarasi-style, and Paithani-look sarees at slower speeds.

When comparing silk-look sarees in Silk Plaza, Millennium Market, or Rohit AC Market, ask how the saree was woven:

  • Water-Jet Woven Sarees: Lightweight georgette, chiffon, crepe, and satin bases used for printed and embroidered sarees (₹150 – ₹750 wholesale).
  • Rapier Jacquard Woven Sarees: Richly woven Lichi silk, Kanjeevaram-look, Banarasi brocade, and Dola silk sarees where the zari buttis and pallu motifs are woven directly into the cloth on the loom (₹450 – ₹3,500+ wholesale).
