What is the difference between an Air Waybill (AWB) and a Bill of Lading (B/L) in textile shipping?

Short answer

An Air Waybill (AWB) is the transport contract and tracking document issued for air courier shipments (DHL, FedEx, Aramex) delivered in 5–8 days, while a Bill of Lading (B/L) is the official title document and receipt issued for ocean freight container shipments.

When importing or exporting wholesale textiles, your logistics method dictates your shipping document:

  • Air Waybill (AWB): Used for express air cargo up to 300–500 kg. Fast, door-to-door delivery, tracked online in real-time.
  • Bill of Lading (B/L): Used for sea freight container shipments (via Nhava Sheva/Mumbai or Hazira/Surat). Acts as a negotiable document of title required by foreign banks for Letter of Credit (LC) payments.
