What does GSM mean for denim jeans, and how do you choose the right weight for apparel?

Short answer

Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz) or grams per square meter (GSM). Lightweight denim (8–10 oz / 200–280 GSM) is used for shirts and dresses; mid-weight (11–13 oz / 350–440 GSM) for standard jeans; and heavy-weight (14+ oz / 470+ GSM) for rigid, durable workwear jeans.

When sourcing denim rolls from mills in Ahmedabad:

  • Summer / Tops: 8 oz to 10 oz.
  • Standard Retail Jeans: 11.5 oz to 12.5 oz (comfortable stretch balance).
  • Raw / Selvedge Workwear: 14 oz to 16 oz (heavy rigidity).
