Do I need an IEC (Import Export Code) to export clothing from India?

Short answer

Yes. An IEC (Import Export Code) is a mandatory 10-digit PAN-linked license issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) for any individual or business importing or exporting goods from India.

Getting an IEC is entirely online and takes 1–2 working days through the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in):

  • Documents Needed: PAN card of the business/proprietor, active bank account statement/cancelled cheque, and address proof.
  • When You Need It: If you are an overseas boutique owner or NRI importing bulk parcels from Surat, Ahmedabad, or Mumbai, your customs broker in your home country will request the Indian supplier's IEC on the commercial invoice.
