What is fabric shrinkage, and why is pre-shrinking essential before garment production?

Short answer

Fabric shrinkage is the reduction in length or width of a textile after washing or steaming. Pre-shrinking (via industrial compactor machines) relaxes the internal yarn tension so that garments do not shrink or distort out of shape after the end customer washes them.

Garment manufacturers in Tiruppur and Jaipur perform strict wash tests:

  • Standard Tolerance: High-quality cotton and rayon garments should exhibit under 3% to 5% dimensional shrinkage.
  • Compacting: Industrial mechanical compactors compress the fabric warp-wise before cutting.
