Industries in Surat and South Gujarat will get uninterrupted power again. On 23 October 2026, Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (DGVCL) cancelled the eight-hour cut from 4 pm to midnight that it had imposed on industrial feeders on each feeder's weekly stagger day. Reports say the decision took effect immediately and followed instructions from higher authorities, after strong protests from industry in the run-up to Diwali.

No official DGVCL statement has been published, and no end date or conditions have been reported. Electricity demand in Gujarat remains high, so industries say they will keep watching the supply closely.

What the cuts cost the industry

Industry leaders shared the following estimates. They are industry figures and have not been independently verified:

  • Processing mills: about 400–450 dyeing and printing mills spent an estimated ₹40–50 crore on generator fuel, roughly ₹10 lakh per mill.
  • Weaving units: the weaving sector says it lost ₹15–20 crore of output on a single cut day.
  • Machine damage: sudden outages burned electronic control cards costing ₹5,000 to ₹50,000, and restarting machines could take up to two hours.

What industry leaders said

Jitubhai Vakharia, president of the South Gujarat Textile Processors Association, welcomed the decision. He said he had not seen such a difficult period in 50 years in the industry, with power problems coming on top of higher crude, coal and dye-chemical prices.

Ashok Jirawala, president of the Federation of Gujarat Weavers Association, said steady power is essential in the days before Diwali to finish deals, dispatch orders, and pay wages and bonuses. He said the weaving industry has about 45,000–48,000 units, and asked for at least 15 minutes' notice before any future cut. Mahendra Ramoliya of the Sachin GIDC association thanked the government for the step.

What has not changed

The reports concern DGVCL's area in South Gujarat. There is no confirmed news yet on cuts by other power companies, such as the 4–11 pm stagger-day cuts reported in Saurashtra. The state's earlier appeal to reduce power use between 5 pm and 11 pm has not been withdrawn.

What it means for Surat traders

Surat weavers and processors can plan full shifts and Diwali dispatches without the weekly evening shutdown, and stop running generators on stagger days. Because Gujarat's demand is still high and no conditions have been published, it is sensible to keep generators serviced and to avoid scheduling critical batches in the 5–11 pm peak until supply is clearly stable.

Questions traders are asking

Has DGVCL cancelled the industrial power cut?

Yes. On 23 October 2026, DGVCL withdrew the 4 pm to midnight cut on industrial feeders' stagger days in Surat and South Gujarat, with immediate effect, according to multiple reports.

How much did the power cuts cost Surat's textile industry?

Industry estimates put generator costs for about 400–450 processing mills at ₹40–50 crore, and weaving losses at ₹15–20 crore on a single cut day. These figures have not been independently verified.

Are power cuts also cancelled in Saurashtra?

No confirmed report yet. The cancellation reported so far covers DGVCL's area in South Gujarat.
