Gujarat's Agriculture Department has asked cotton farmers to register by 31 October 2026 if they want to sell their crop under the minimum support price (MSP) system this season. Registration is done online through the Cotton Corporation of India's (CCI) "Kapas Kisan" mobile app. Farmers who need help can contact the state's WhatsApp helpline on 9428237246, and details of procurement centres are available on the CCI website, cotcorp.org.in.
New MSP for 2026-27
The Office of the Textile Commissioner notified the cotton MSP for the 2026-27 season in an order dated 27 July 2026:
- Medium staple: ₹8,267 a quintal, up ₹557 (7.22%) from ₹7,710.
- Long staple: ₹8,667 a quintal, up ₹557 (6.87%) from ₹8,110.
The MSP applies to seed cotton (kapas). When open-market prices fall below this level, CCI steps in to buy from registered farmers, which effectively sets a floor for raw cotton prices in the season.
Why the textile trade should watch this
Gujarat is one of India's biggest cotton-growing states, and its crop feeds the spinning, weaving and denim mills in and around Ahmedabad. The new season opens with large stocks: the Cotton Association of India expects the 2025-26 season to have closed with about 93.59 lakh bales, after record imports. Read our report on record cotton imports and stocks.
A higher MSP supports farmers' incomes, while large stocks tend to limit how far market prices can rise. How these two forces balance out over the coming months will shape cotton yarn and fabric costs for Ahmedabad's mills.
