Laxmipati Group, one of Surat's best-known saree makers, is expanding into technical textiles for the defence sector, according to a report published on 17 October 2026. The group is producing specialised nylon fabrics with high-tenacity (high-strength) properties at its Surat facility, alongside its regular saree and garment fabrics.
From sarees to defence fabric
Staff at the plant said the same facility makes georgette and chiffon fabrics for sarees and garments, and nylon fabrics for defence applications. Grey, unfinished fabric is chemically treated and further processed to improve its strength and quality before it is used for defence purposes.
The company says fabrics of this kind were earlier imported, and that making them in Surat supports local employment and the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals.
What the company says
- Amit Mittal of Laxmipati Group said the company is meeting domestic demand and hopes to export these fabrics in future.
- Managing director Sanjay Sarawagi said Gujarat has a very good textile policy and that industry has always received strong support from the state.
The report did not give order values, production volumes or the names of defence buyers.
Part of a wider shift in Surat
Laxmipati's move fits a push by Surat's industry bodies to get man-made fibre weavers and processors into technical textiles, which serve defence, medical, construction and sports markets. Gujarat's textile policy gives the segment priority, with capital, power and interest subsidies. Surat units have made defence products before: in 2024, the Union Textiles Minister saw parachute fabric and protective army gear being made at a factory in Surat district.
