About Rajkot Patola Weavers
Rajkot Patola Weavers is a wholesale textile market in Pedak Road, Rajkot specialising in Rajkot Patola (Single Ikat Silk). Best suited to buyers of authentic handwoven patola sarees.
Rajkot Patola: Single Ikat Silk
Rajkot Patola is a GI-tagged handwoven silk saree. Unlike the double ikat Patan Patola, Rajkot Patola is single ikat: only the weft threads are tied and dyed before weaving, while the warp is a plain colour. That makes it more affordable while keeping the patola look.
History and Where It Is Woven
The craft came to Rajkot in 1951, when Karamchand Godhamdas, trained in Patan, set up a workshop and weaving school. Weavers work in Rajkot city and district, in areas such as Sarvodaya Society and Pedak Road, and the craft has spread to Surendranagar district. The GI application was made by the Rajkot District Weavers Association.
How It Is Made
- Pure silk yarn, with zari from Surat for the border and pallu.
- Weft threads tied and dyed in the pattern before weaving.
- A family team of about five takes roughly a week per saree.
Buying Authentic Patola
- Ask whether it is single ikat (Rajkot) or double ikat (Patan); prices differ widely.
- Look for the slight blur at pattern edges that hand-tied ikat gives; printed copies are sharp.
- Buy from known weavers or ask about the GI tag.
