Bhavani, about 14 km north of Erode Junction where the Kaveri and Bhavani rivers meet, is known as "Carpet City". It is the home of the Bhavani Jamakkalam, a handwoven cotton rug and blanket that received a GI tag in 2005–06.
How the trade works
Handloom and powerloom units are spread across the town and drive its economy. The town holds a weekly shandy, and commercial establishments line the main roads. In busier years more than 750 traders bought jamakkalams in Bhavani on a single day, and parcels are couriered to several states.
The craft
The craft is traced to the Jangamar weavers, whose coloured-yarn blankets became so popular that other local weavers moved away from sarees. Jamakkalams are woven on wooden pit looms. About 1,500 people work in the craft, around two-thirds of them women, and master weavers lease looms owned by trade merchants.
Exports
Jamakkalams go to Sweden, Germany, Italy, the UK, the US and Singapore. IKEA has bought them since 1993, and Co-optex sells them in its stores.
