Where to buy
The town has roughly 33 weaver societies. Chentex, Chencoptex and Kalicoptex are the best known, and Chencoptex Handlooms is on Kumarapuri 3rd Street, Arthanaripalayam. Many private bedsheet sellers trade in the town too. Co-optex supports the cooperatives with yarn and sales.
What is made
Weavers make bedsheets, blankets, pillow covers, napkins, table mats, towels, quilts, curtains, cushion covers and table runners, in plain, terry and jacquard weaves. Large looms can weave king-size bedsheets in one piece: jacquard looms up to 90 inches wide and plain looms up to 110 inches. IKEA has sourced Chennimalai fabric, and international buyers order with their own designs.
History
Before independence, Chennimalai weavers mainly made sarees and lungis. After independence they moved to home textiles, led by M. P. Nachimuthu, a Padma Shri recipient (1983) who founded Chentex. The town's weavers' colony of 1,010 houses is described as one of the biggest in Asia.
