What is the difference between Sanganeri print and Bagru print in Jaipur?

Short answer

Sanganeri prints feature fine floral motifs printed on a bright white or pastel cotton background, whereas Bagru prints use natural vegetable dyes (indigo blue, madder red, iron black) and the Dabu mud-resist technique on earthy backgrounds.

Both Sanganer and Bagru hold Geographical Indication (GI) tags in Rajasthan:

  • Sanganeri Print: Produced in Sanganer (near Jaipur Airport) using both wooden hand-blocks and flat-bed screens on bleached 60x60 cotton, mulmul, and bedsheets.
  • Bagru & Dabu Print: Produced in Bagru (28 km west on Ajmer Road) using natural dyes, indigo vats, and black clay mud-resist (Dabu) paste—highly prized by sustainable fashion boutiques and overseas buyers.
