What is the difference between Crepe de Chine and Georgette fabric?

Short answer

Crepe de Chine is a lightweight, finely crinkled silk or synthetic fabric with a smooth, matte finish and subtle drape, whereas Georgette has a distinctly rougher, pebbly texture, greater springiness, and a more sheer, bouncy drape.

Both are traded heavily across Surat's saree markets:

  • Crepe de Chine: Offers a smoother hand-feel and elegant, flowing fall; popular for printed formalwear.
  • Georgette: Features a dry, grainy texture and superior resilience; ideal for heavily embroidered and layered partywear sarees.
