Following nearly two months of relentless cost increases that squeezed weaving margins across South Gujarat, Surat’s man-made fibre weaving sector is experiencing welcome price stability. Leading petrochemical and polymer producers—including Reliance Industries—have kept base rates for polyester Partially Oriented Yarn (POY) and Fully Drawn Yarn (FDY) unchanged for late October dispatches, aided by cooling global crude oil benchmarks.
The Relief After a 40% Raw Material Surge
Between June and mid-October 2026, raw polymer feedstocks Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) witnessed steep escalations, pushing POY rates in Surat from ₹140–150 a kg to over ₹180 a kg. Weavers in Sachin GIDC, Pandesara, and Pipodara had struggled to pass these hikes onto grey cloth buyers, triggering talks of early factory shutdowns.
With Brent crude pulling back from September highs, upstream price hikes have paused. Prevailing synthetic filament rates in the Surat yarn market are quoted as follows:
- Polyester POY (130/34 Denier): Quoted steady at ₹178–₹180 per kg.
- Polyester FDY (Bright/Semi-Dull): Hovering around ₹186–₹192 per kg depending on filament count.
- Polyester Texturised Yarn (PTY 80/72): Trading firmly at ₹195–₹205 per kg, supported by active demand from rapier jacquard weavers.
- Viscose Filament Yarn (VFY): Remaining range-bound with steady buyer off-take for Dola silk and luxury semi-crepe warp beams.
Wedding Season Weaving Under Favourable Cost Baseline
The stabilization in yarn rates arrives at a strategic moment for South Gujarat’s 6 to 7 lakh powerlooms. As units shift loom beams away from low-margin lightweight Diwali prints toward heavy jacquard fabrics, Dola silk, and organza tissue for winter weddings, predictable raw material rates give weavers confidence to book advance grey supply contracts.
Trade analysts from MANTRA note that if polymer prices remain stable through November, weaving realizations on fancy fabrics will deliver healthy operating margins of ₹2.50 to ₹4.00 per metre, setting up a strong recovery for Surat’s manufacturing engine when markets reopen after the Diwali vacation.
