A fire broke out at Adinath Textile Market in the Salabatpura area of Surat at around 10:30 am on Monday, 19 October 2026. It started in a cloth shop on the third floor of the building, and thick smoke from the floor caused panic among traders and workers in the market.
How the fire was handled
- Around 15–16 fire vehicles from about 10 fire stations across Surat reached the market, according to local reports.
- The Chief Fire Officer, a Deputy Fire Officer and other senior officers led the operation on site.
- Traders and workers were moved out of the building in time, and no injuries were reported.
- Firefighters brought the fire under control after about two hours and stopped it from spreading beyond the shop where it began, after which cooling work continued.
The cloth stock in the affected shop was destroyed, causing a heavy loss to the shop owner. No estimate of the damage has been given. The cause of the fire is being investigated; local reports say a short circuit is suspected, but this has not been officially confirmed.
Third market fire in about six weeks
Salabatpura is one of the oldest parts of Surat's wholesale cloth trade, with closely packed market buildings full of fabric stock. Monday's fire follows two others in recent weeks:
- 9 September: a night-time fire on the upper floor of Shyam Sangini Textile Market in Saroli took about four hours to control, with more than 20 fire vehicles and around 150 personnel involved. Several shops were affected; no casualties were reported.
- 24 September: a fire on the third floor of Regent Textile Market near Kamela Darwaja, Salabatpura, burned synthetic fabric stock kept in a godown. More than 15 fire vehicles responded.
The fire department has also been stepping up checks during the festive season. On 16 October it closed a Navratri venue in Sarsana over fire-safety violations, including exposed wiring and LPG cylinders in use inside the enclosed dome.
