The Evolution of Fabric Weaving
While traditional handlooms and shuttle powerlooms built India's historic trade, modern wholesale textile production relies on high-speed shuttleless weaving machines.
Main Types of Shuttleless Looms
- Waterjet Looms: Propel weft yarn across the shed using a high-pressure jet of water. Because water doesn't absorb into hydrophobic fibers, waterjet looms dominate polyester and nylon filament fabrics. They are the workhorses of Surat's MMF fabric production.
- Airjet Looms: Propel weft yarn using compressed air pulses. They weave at high speeds (up to 1,200+ RPM) and excel in light-to-medium cotton yarns, denims, and poplins. Widely installed across Ahmedabad and Coimbatore mills.
- Rapier Looms: Carry weft yarn across using flexible or rigid mechanical grippers (rapiers). While slower than airjets, rapiers can handle diverse yarn counts, fancy yarns, multi-colour wefts, and delicate fibers (pure silk, wool, and heavy suiting).
Patterning Mechanisms
- Cam Shedding: Simple plain, twill, and satin weaves (basic constructions up to 8–10 shafts).
- Dobby: Geometric patterns and small motifs using up to 24–28 shafts.
- Jacquard: Controls every individual warp yarn independently via digital punched cards or electronic solenoids, enabling intricate florals, brocades, Banarasi zari borders, and figurative tapestries.
Compare fabric types and production costs using the textile margin calculator.
