About Abdul Gani Textile Market
Abdul Gani Textile Market is a wholesale textile market in Panneerselvam Park, Erode specialising in Veshtis, Lungis, Innerwear & Jamakkalam. It has about 240 shops. Best suited to retail buyers and seasonal bulk buying (Onam) of veshtis, lungis and innerwear.
The Abdul Gani Textile Market (EKM Abdul Gani Textile Market), known as Gani Market, is Erode's oldest organised cloth market. It stands near Panneerselvam Park in central Erode, opened in 1983, and is owned and run by the Erode City Municipal Corporation.
The new complex
The old, crowded market was rebuilt under the Smart City scheme as a modern textile complex. The new commercial complex opened around 2024 and has about 240 shops.
What changed for buyers
For decades, Gani Market hosted Erode's famous weekly cloth market (the "sandhai"), where weavers and merchants traded in bulk and buyers came from across South India. After the new complex opened, the weekly sandhai there stopped. Wholesale buyers now go to the Monday night weekly market around the Central Textile Market and to Ashokapuram. Gani Market's shopkeepers have asked the Erode Corporation to bring the sandhai back.
Trade today
Today Gani Market does mainly retail trade, though it still sees seasonal bulk buying. Before Onam, Kerala buyers purchase white veshtis (dhotis), lungis and innerwear, and the market's shops together do about Rs 10 crore of business in the Onam season. The Bhavani Jamakkalam, a GI-tagged rug from nearby Bhavani, has long been one of its best-known products.
