What is the 4-Point System for checking fabric defects when buying bulk rolls?

Short answer

The 4-Point System (ASTM D5430) is the standard textile inspection method that assigns 1 to 4 penalty points per defect based on length (up to 3"=1pt, 3–6"=2pts, 6–9"=3pts, over 9"=4pts). A fabric roll passes as First Quality if total points stay under 40 per 100 square yards.

When buying dyed, printed, or RFD fabric in bulk rolls from Surat, Ahmedabad, or Mumbai, garment factories inspect 10% to 100% of rolls on an illuminated inspection table:

  • Maximum penalty per linear meter/yard: 4 points.
  • Holes larger than 1 inch: Automatically penalized 4 points.
  • Critical checks alongside points: Shade variation (center-to-selvedge shading), weft bowing/skewing (must be under 2–3%), and GSM tolerance (±5%).
