Why does fabric width ("Panna") matter when calculating garment production costs?

Short answer

Fabric width in Indian markets is generally categorized into "Chhota Panna" (35 to 44 inches) and "Bada Panna" (54 to 60 inches). Wide-width fabric allows pattern pieces to nest closer together on the cutting table, reducing fabric wastage by 10% to 18%.

When buying running fabric rolls in Surat or Mumbai, always check the exact width (*panna*):

  • 44" Panna: Standard for traditional saree blouses and narrow-cut garments.
  • 58"–60" Panna: Essential for men's shirting, trousers, western dresses, and wide-bed home linens. Always calculate cost per square meter rather than price per linear meter.
