How Surat's textile trade works
Surat is one of India's largest centres for man-made fibre (MMF) fabric. Almost every step happens in the city:
- Yarn: polyester and viscose yarns such as POY, PTY and FDY.
- Weaving: powerloom units turn yarn into grey (unfinished) fabric.
- Processing: process houses dye, print and finish the fabric, many in industrial estates such as Pandesara and Sachin GIDC.
- Value addition: embroidery, stone work, zari and lace.
- Trading: wholesale markets, mostly along Ring Road, sell to buyers from across India and abroad.
- Dispatch: transporters send parcels to every state.
Buying in Surat
- Wholesalers usually sell catalogue-wise: a set of different designs sold together. Some also sell single pieces at a higher rate.
- Most markets are closed on Sunday. Before Diwali, FOSTTA (the Federation of Surat Trade and Textile Associations) sometimes asks markets to open on Sundays for outstation buyers.
- Markets close for the Diwali break and traditionally reopen on Labh Pancham.
- Check whether Surat markets are open today before you travel.
