India’s Two Great Knitwear Capitals
While Surat and Ahmedabad rule woven filament and cotton fabrics, the knitted fabric and readymade hosiery ecosystem is dominated by two specialized cities: Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu and Ludhiana in Punjab.
Tiruppur: India’s Cotton Knitwear & T-Shirt Capital
- Located on the banks of the Noyyal River, Tiruppur accounts for over 50% of India’s knitted apparel exports and supplies cotton T-shirts, polo shirts, nightwear, and innerwear globally.
- Sustainable Processing: Tiruppur pioneered industrial Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) CETPs (Common Effluent Treatment Plants) to recycle and reuse 95%+ of dyeing water.
- Wholesale Markets: Khaderpet, Rayapuram, and Kadarpet are bustling hubs for surplus export garments, wholesale T-shirts, and knitted yardage sold by the kilogram.
Ludhiana: The Woollen Knitwear & Hosiery Powerhouse
- Known as the "Manchester of India" for winter apparel, Ludhiana produces the bulk of India’s acrylic and woollen knitwear: cardigans, sweaters, thermal innerwear, tracksuits, and socks.
- Wholesale Bazaars: Bajwa Nagar, Mochpura Bazaar, and Dal Bazar are famous trading clusters for winter apparel, woollen yarns, and circular knitted fabric.
